I love to travel, I love to snack, and I have food allergies—this post is one that I’m excited for, and I hope you are too! Traveling with allergies and/or dietary restrictions means that it’s always important to have snacks on hand, just in case. Depending on where you are traveling, you never know if/when you will find a grocery store to buy food or a restaurant to have a meal.
I am allergic to dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (except almonds and coconut), fish, and shellfish. I also practice a vegan diet. With that being said, it is safe for me to have foods made in the same facility as my allergens. In this post, I will try to point out which items are made in dedicated facilities and which ones are not. Please note that these snacks work for me, but you should always double check to make sure they will work for you! If you are looking for other snack recommendations that may fit your allergens, I highly recommend checking out the free Spokin app, where you can see reviews from other people in the allergy community.
I will update this list as I discover more favorite snacks!
That’s It Fruit Bars
That’s It Fruit Bars are made with fruit—that’s it! I especially love the Apple + Blueberry and Apple + Strawberry bars for easy delicious snacks. The Keto Kick Coffee Energy Bars are also great if you are looking for something with caffeine to jumpstart your morning.
That’s It Bars are made in a dedicated facility free from the top 12 allergens. You can purchase their products on their website or from Thrive Market, or in-store at Costco, Target, Whole Foods, CVS Pharmacy, Sprouts, Rite Aid, Schnucks, and more. They come in both miniature and regular sizes!
GoMacro Bars
GoMacro Bars are my absolute favorite protein/snack bars. The texture is like a soft, chewy cookie, and the flavors taste amazing. The three nut-free options are Heartwarming Retreat (Oatmeal Chocolate Chip), Protein Purity (Sunflower Butter + Chocolate), and Pure Promise (Maple Sea Salt). All of these are delicious, but I’d say that Oatmeal Chocolate Chip might be my favorite. I have also tried Everlasting Joy (Coconut + Almond Butter + Chocolate Chips), Protein Decadence (Dark Chocolate + Almonds), and Sweet Awakening (Mocha Chocolate Chip). Note that these bars are not made in a dedicated nut-free facility as they produce flavors made with peanuts, cashews, almonds, etc.
These bars can be purchased at Whole Foods, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Safeway, Walmart, Kroger, Raley’s, Thrive Market, and more. You can also purchase them on the GoMacro website (use this link and code SHAREFIRST15 for $15 off your first order!)—I love getting them directly from GoMacro because you can find them in both the regular size and the miniature size.
Enjoy Life Breakfast Ovals
Available in Chocolate Chip Banana, Maple Fig, Berry Medley, and Apple Cinnamon, Enjoy Life Breakfast Ovals are delicious soft-baked bars that make for convenient breakfasts or on-the-go snacks. My favorite flavor is Chocolate Chip Banana because it tastes just like homemade banana bread.
Enjoy Life products are free from the 14 most common allergens and made in facilities completely free from gluten and nuts.
You can buy their products on their website or from Thrive Market, or in-store at Sprouts, Raley’s, and more.
DIY Trail Mix
Trail mix is a convenient snack, and it’s great because it is so customizable. Shopping in the bulk section can be nerve-wracking for those of us with allergies because of potential for cross-contamination, so I highly recommend checking out Gerbs Allergy Friendly Foods to order seeds, dried fruit, granola, and chocolate chips produced in an allergy-friendly facility.
My go-to trail mix includes pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, unsweetened coconut flakes, dried apples, almonds, and chocolate chips.
Roasted Broad Beans
I love Bada Bean Bada Boom’s crunchy roasted broad beans. Available in flavors ranging from Sweet Cinnamon to Mesquite BBQ, they’re great to take on the road because you can buy them in individual 1-ounce packs or resealable 3-ounce or 4.5-ounce bags. In addition to the two mentioned above, my favorite flavors include Sweet Sriracha, Sweet Onion and Mustard, and Cocoa Dusted. I personally did not enjoy Spicy Wasabi (I do not like the taste of wasabi), but all the other ones are delicious. They are vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, and nut-free, but note that they are made in a facility that also processes peanuts and tree nuts.
You can purchase them at Whole Foods, CVS Pharmacy, Sprout’s, GNC, and more, or online at Amazon and on their website.
88 Acres Bars & Seed Butters
88 Acres makes granola bars, protein bars, seed butters, dressings, and granolas in a variety of flavors. There are six types of granola bars (my favorites are Cinnamon Maple and Dark Chocolate Sea Salt) and two types of protein bars. The seed butters can be purchased in pouches which make for great snacks—or you can easily use them to make sandwiches if you have some bread! Their products are made in a facility free of peanuts, tree nuts, gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, and sesame.
You can purchase the products at Whole Foods, Kroger, Target, Walmart, and more, or directly from their website.
Rule Breaker Snacks Bites
Rule Breaker Snacks produces treats that are vegan, nut-free, gluten-free, and made in an allergen-friendly facility. They have bites, brownies, and blondies in tons of different flavors, from Birthday Cake to P’Nutter Chocolate Chip (made with sunflower seed butter). They’re portable and delicious, which make them great travel snacks. Be sure to watch for the seasonal flavors, as those are some of my favorites: Strawberry Shortcake, Pumpkin Spice, and Mint Chocolate Chip.
You can find Rule Breaker Snacks at a variety of stores and on their website.
Note: If you purchase GoMacro Bars, Libre Naturals Granola Bars, or a Thrive Market membership using the links in this post, I will receive a discount on my future purchases. The other links just take you to the product/company website, so I do not gain anything from your purchase. Regardless, all of these recommendations represent my honest opinions—they are products that I actually love and use! Also, if you’re a college student, teacher, veteran, first responder, or family in need, you can get a free Thrive Market membership.
